| I assume this topic must have been covered before, but since it's not on the first page, and it's such an excellent forum for opinions, rants and arguments, I'm sure we can do this again.
What are, in your opinion, the ten greatest games of all time? Lets have a list going bottom to top, with a brief summary of why for each. Also, pop in the consoles you have owned, for sake of forgiveness when people lament you for not including games you've never heard of. Go! Consoles owned: SNES, Playstation, N64, Dreamcast, X-Box, Playstation 2, X-Box 360 (briefly) Will return to complete 10-6, I have to go out. 10. 9. 8. 7. 6. 5. Sid Meier's Civilization IV Or maybe II. I don't know. The point is that one civilization game needs to be up here, because they are the masters of their genre. PC Gamer magazine once suggested that "If you didn't sleep, you'd probably end up spending two thirds of your life playing civilization" In fact, it might be argued that on this scale of world dominating turn-based strategy, they are the only recognisable members of the genre. And the concept and gameplay has barely changed in twenty years. To explain the intricies of Civ would take years. Go play. 4. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past LttP has been voted the greatest SNES game of all time. That's no small commendation, so how does it manage it? With superb level design, brilliant puzzles, huge size, and, above all, some of the most satisfyingly simple yet rewarding gameplay around. LttP is a fantastic Action game, brilliant puzzle game, and great RPG roled into one. If you have never played this game, you do yourself a disservice. 3. The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time It was close, you know. LttP or OoT? Gah. A man could debate it forever. Yet I think OoT just clinches it. The use of the extra dimension, the better selection of mini-games (Horse Archery could be a video game in its own right), and, perhaps most importantly, the feel carry OoT above its predecessor. If the University of Oxford did a degree on Level Design, then OoT would be default example of how to do things right. Great battles, fantastic puzzles, incredibly satisfying resolutions and, in places, areas that are just wonderful to behold without even playing them. OoT aces this. Yet it also brings together a series of characters that inspire care and love, with probably less than a page of dialogue each. The likes of Saria and Zelda somehow manage to be wonderful characters without lifting a finger. I could rant on forever, but I won't. Let's move on. 2. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (henceforth abbreviated to KOTOR) Ambition can be a bad thing. When the news came to me that they were making a Star Wars RPG, I died a little inside. It was never going to work. When they told me it would use a forgotten realms engine, I facepalmed. Star wars meets Dungeons and Dragons? >_< When they said that it would combine all the things that are good about console RPGS, with all the things that are good about PC RPGS, I uttered a bellow of cynicism so loud the shockwave went around the world three times. Ambition such as this rarely comes before a fall. Then, oweing to a lack of anything else to play, I got a copy of KOTOR. And I am eating humble pie for the rest of my days. There are a few things to mention about KOTOR. Firstly, it IS Star Wars. Not in the way a thousand other games have used to license, taking names and scenes and adding them in, or even in the way the last three movies have slaughtered the franchise. KOTOR has the FEEL of those first three films. Moving around the galaxy is a pleasure, ever area lovingly in touch with those originals and every piece of the story feeling gloriously, gloriously canon. Secondly, is the interface. Behind what appears vaguely to be a 3D engine (the graphics, for the time, are quite delicious), is a modified version of the Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale engine. Real time, but obviously dependant upon turns and demanding of that pause-issue commands-unpause feature. It's also stat heavy, in the way that good RPGs are. Levelling up is a joy, never a chore, and the system never lets you power level past the point of enjoyment, nor get crushed for not levelling. Thirdly, KOTOR features characters and a story that puts most Console RPGs to shame. I'm not going to talk about it in detail, suffice to say that before long your party (of 3) will be based more likely around your love for the characters than for their abilities - probably crippling yourself in the process. And it's a wonderful feeling. Bland and uninteractive party members (the bane of so many PC RPGs) are nowhere to be seen. The conversations that propel you through the story are also quite open ended for a game capable of maintaining such a story and flow. KOTOR does the impossible, successfully combining a loved world with two different styles of game, to make for an extremely rewarding experience. And Malak and Revan are arguably the two finest bad guys ever. Only one video game character stands above them, to my mind. Guess which game he's in? 1. Final Fantasy VII Obviously. |

| Consoles owned: PS1, PS2, PS3, Xbox, GB, GBC, GBSP.
I'm going to start with me number 1.... I couldn't possible start at 10 so I'm going to go down my list from the best games. 1. Final Fantasy Series Well, I don't think it's fair to pick a single game from the franchise, unless you want about 4 from this Franchise in my list. Well... The Final Fantasy game I picked up was in fact Final Fantasy 7, which is no doubt, a very overrated game, but at the time, I was young, and loved it so much, I didn't really understand any of what was going on because I was young, but I did bloody love that game, it was just great, probably my first ever RPG, and because I was so young there wasn't much I could critique about, therefore making it a perfect game back at the time. Replayed the game a few times through again, and I still love it :) Favourite character definitely Red XIII, he's just so cool. Okay, Final Fantasy VIII, not got much to say about it... for me it took the 'Fantasy' out of the game, it was a 'OK' game, never completed it though, but I plan to complete it on a emulator or PS3 if it gets released for the PS store. Final Fantasy IX, it was everything I could wish for and more, the characters, defined the word 'Fantasy' to me, I was in love with the characters, I was in love with this game :) Ok, to tell the truth, I have never completed this game either, I got given a save when I was like 9 years old, that was RIGHT at the end, and I beat it that way, but I'm re-playing that on emulator :) Fave char... Got to have to choose Vivi, he's SO COOL! This game had a lot to offer to me, it still does, I don't know which one I prefer from FFVII or FFIX though, they both win a place in my heart. Final Fantasy X, Well, more of a movie than a game with all the cut scenes, but they made the game amazing for me, I loved this game to bits, oh, and I spent more than half my playing time on 'Blitzball'. The story gets to me as well, how he got dragged from his 'Time' and his 'City' into a unknown time and land, where he proceeded to defeat Sin, it's just different. Final Fantasy XII, eh? I loved the battle system, I'm going to be honest. The storyline was out of order, it was a simple, 'Hey who is this guy joining our party and why?' We never get the answer to that question for anyone, you can't get emotionally close to these characters, because you don't know any back story, this ruined a lot for me, but the ending was cool :D 2. Call Of Duty Series I'm a fan of my shooters online, from Call of duty 2 :) I currently play World at War, after accumulating approximately 25 days playing time on Call of Duty 4 during the time it was out before World at War came, they're just mind-blowing games, and addicting. Each game has been graphically pleasing with stunning environments, and the game play has just shocked us. Not much more to say about this, I think you pretty much know the points I'd make about it. 3. Well... I'm only 15, so more or less the list will only be of the recent generation games or PS2 and PS1 games. Might come back and fill them up later. (edited by SoulStorm on 08-16-09 02:59 PM) |

| Please note that my favorite games are not the same as the ones I consider to be the greatest. Gaming is a very personal experience, and as such, I like to separate the two. If you want to see what my absolute favorites are, my 23 top-rated games are listed here. Yes, there's some overlap.
Systems owned: 2600, DC, PS2, PC (Win), Mac (System 7 and OSX), Wii, 360, GBA Systems played, borrowed, etc.: NES, GB, SNES, Genesis, Master System/Megadrive Other: I frequented arcades back in the day and buy old games via Virtual Console. Just about every game I've ever owned, borrowed, beaten, and/or completed. 10. Dance Dance Revolution series - A versatile masterpiece of the rhythm game genre equally suited for competition, exercise, and just having fun. While there are some hits and misses, the series as a whole is a classic which has inspired its share of knockoffs. There's a DDR machine in practically every arcade for a reason. 9. We ♥ Katamari - An even bigger and better game than its predecessor, Katamari Damacy, it also goes where few games have gone before: beyond the fourth wall. The offbeat humor, charming graphics, simple controls, convincing physics, and incredibly detailed levels all make for a game not to be missed. The only issue present are loading screens, but even these are made bearable by the King of All Cosmos' banter. 8. Ms. Pac-Man - Like DDR, another ubiquitous arcade classic, and like We ♥ Katamari, another game which is better than the one that came before it. Ms. Pac-Man is perhaps the finest Pac-game of all time, and certainly the one which has lasted the longest. An arcade without a Ms. Pac-Man machine is an arcade not worth visiting. 7. Disgaea - An SRPG unlike any other, with tons of character classes, stat crunching, and challenges. It also has one of the funniest stories in video games, a medium where humor is depressingly rare. 6. StarCraft - An exquisitely balanced RTS, and the title against which all others are compared, StarCraft is popular all over the world, most famously in South Korea. Hundreds of games are still played via LAN and/or Battle.net on a daily basis—not bad for an eleven year-old game. Oh, and the story in the campaign mode's good as well, and features one of gaming's best villainesses, Kerrigan, the vicious Queen of Blades. 5. Chrono Trigger/The World Ends With You (tie) - Two wildly experimental RPGs, one spanning several ages while the other is highly restricted in both time and space. Chrono Trigger uses its time travel theme incredibly well, and has one of the best turn-based battle systems in the RPG genre. The World Ends With You has a far more complex action-based system, but one that's also very flexible as well as engaging. Both games feature memorable characters, colorful locations, fantastic design, and infectious music, and are Squaresoft's finest works. 4. Doom - Not only did Doom build on Wolfenstein 3D's foundations and was a marvelous early FPS, it also helped birth the mod scene. To many tech writers, a favorite benchmark for a new electronic device's power is whether or not it will run Doom, to this day one of the most ported games of all time. 3. Pokemon series - The greatest JRPG series of all time, bar none, and one of the very few which is truly all ages. The stories are mere fluff, but that's not what Pokemon is about—they're pure gamer's games, with the bonus feature of appealing to the collecting spirit. One of the most honest, engaging, wholesome, and fun video game series ever made. 2. Super Mario Bros. - It was a fun and challenging game back in the day, and it still is now, and although later Super Marios have improved upon the formula, there's nothing like the original. I'd also rate SMB's iconic soundtrack as the single greatest game OST of all time. 1. Tetris - I personally prefer Panel de Pon (aka Tetris Attack, Puzzle League, and other titles), but Tetris is the stuff legends are made of. A deceptively simple game consisting of seven pieces, each made up of four squares, with the goal being to create lines from them while they fall at random. It is a work of absolute elegance, and undoubtedly the single most popular, ubiquitous game ever made. Tetris is twenty years old and although it has seen changes in its various incarnations, the base game hasn't changed, and is still played by people the world over. A hundred years from now, people will still play Tetris. Perhaps it will even join the storied ranks of go and chess and become a game for the ages. |

10. Gran Turismo 4 9. Twisted Metal 2 8. Metal Gear Solid 7. NASCAR 2003 (Papyrus/PC) 6. Battlefield 2 (PC) 5. Flight Simulator '98 4. Final Fantasy VIII 3. Super Mario Bros. 3 2. Age of Empires II 1. Final Fantasy VII I dont think Final Fantasy VII is overrated. Any game that can make grown men cry and keep as much interest as it has over a decade later is not overrated. You'll find people call every popular movie or game overrated Google popular forms of media like The Godfather, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Ocarina of time, Final Fantasy VII followed by the word "overrated" and look how many hits you get People make the mistake of labeling something overrated just because alot of people like/love it but they dont find it anything special. They see the obsession with FFVII, the fan forums like this one still going 15 years after release, people who name themselves or their real child Cloud (I know someone who did)and because they didn't think that much of the game overrated is the first thing that comes to their mind. |

Final Fantasy VI (The most well rounded soundtrack, some of the best characters, and nostalgia all around.) 2. Chrono Trigger (Romance,Time Travel, and The Dream Team... could it get any better?) 1. Final Fantasy VII (The best soundtrack, due to the MANY standouts, the best characters, the best story, and the only final fantasy with a BAGILLION SEQUELS/PREQUELS... sure they may not be the best things ever, but this game is excersizing why it's the best...) |

| Goodness me, do they have to be just 10
Here's my list, all the games in it will probably shuffle places depending on my mood. Systems owned : Spectrum +2A, Master System, Gameboy, Mega Drive, Mega CD II, 3DO, Saturn, Dreamcast, DS, DS Lite, PS1 PS2 PSP, PS3, Xbox, Wii, PC. Additional Systems played on - BBC B Micro, Acorn Archemedes, C64, Amstrad 464, NES, Gameboy Colour, GBA, SNES, CDi, Xbox360. Phew! Alrighty, here goes... in an order which'll change like the weather. 10 - Metal Gear Solid (PS1)- Such genius ideas, and from the moment it first broke the fourth wall, I knew I was hooked. The sequel pushed the boundaries in graphics and interactivity but you can never beat the original. That Psycho mantis fight blew my mind. 9 - Daytona USA (Arcade) Rooooooooollllllllling Staaaaaaaaaaaartt The game that made my heart skip a beat every time I passed it. It just looked so cool, the music, the camera angles, the fact you could see Sonic in the wall, I'd have given anything to have this at home, and now I probably could. Ridge Racer had better music, but this is the one which captured my heart. 8 - Fantasy World Dizzy (Spectrum) Dizzy games are a sort of platform adventure game, I loved them all and this one which had puzzles based on fairy tales. It was this game which made me found the unofficial Dizzy fanclub (membership - 1) Still, tis game is timeless, and has bags of character. 7 - Sonic 2 (Megadrive) Ah the first game I ever completed. Sonic had it all, the attitude, the excellent soundtrack (Mystic Cave FTW), the speed and the adrenalin rush when getting Supersonic for the first time was palpable. I believed Sonic 2 was the pinnacle of platformer perfection, till I got a Wii and played number 6.... 6 - Super Mario World (SNES) Shigeru Myamoto's a genius, he really is, this is sublime gaming and the best platforming will ever be. 97 exits, awesome levels, and Yoshi, what more could a man want? 5 - Grand Theft Auto Vice City (PS2) GTA IV nearly slipped in here but Vice City edges it out with it's soundtrack, it's humour and it's style. The sandbox game is a genre I love due to its open ended ness, and besides I'm 30 now with a mortgage to pay I don't have hours to spend on.... 4 - Final Fantasy VII (PS1) Yep, only fourth, and I always struggle to place this within my top 10 at times. I'm really ambivalent towards it, and at times it's not even my fave FF. (FF9, FF10, FF13 jostle for position), but in a way it has to be there because it truly did change my life in many ways. The story's not that great, the music's been bettered, the graphics are hopelessly outdated by todays standards, but FFVII remains here, like your first kiss, always and forever in my heart and head. 3 Controversial territory now - Rock Band 2 (PS3) I just know htere are some real musicians here who balk at the idea of grown men such as I playing on plastic instruments to simulate something which requires true skill but honestly it's a whole new way to appreciate music, socially and you really feel you're involved. It opens your horizons to new types of music too. It's my ultimate de-stress game. 2. Tetris (Any) Reeve as already gone over a lot of te reasons why this is up there but it's timeless. I've yet to met someone who's never played it and it's picked up in a fraction of a second. It's genius comes in it's simplicity and the fact we all deep down like putting things in order. 1. Little Big Planet (PS3) Imagine a game that can be anything and it's only boundary is the imagination, it can be a platformer, Puzzle game, music game, method to propose to someone, a science experiment. Imagine no more. LBP is revolutionary, but sadly hardly anyone can see it's potential. Perhaps in time it'll be seen as the classic it is. :) |

| Suppose I'll jump in with mine now.
Systems owned: SNES, Megadrive, N64, PS1, Dreamcast, Xbox, Gamecube, Xbox360, GBpocket, GBC, GBA, PSP, NDS 10 - Dissidia: Final Fantasy - Say what you will about this game, but for me, it was the fulfillment of a dream I'd held since I was 7. Barring the pure fanservice, it's quite well done as well. Graphically, it's top notch, a true display of what the PSP is capable of, and gameplay is simple, yet....oh who am I kidding, this is here because I'm a fanboy. 9. Pokemon series - I remember when I got my copy of Pokemon Red. I was on holidays with my Mum on the gold coast, and it was my holiday present. I subsequently went through 10 sets of batteries on my Game Boy Pocket. I loved the HELL out of it, and when Gold and Silver rolled round, everything that was good about Pokemon got a hundred times better. They're addictive to a degree that means they should probably be labeled illicit substances, and they're portable? Far out, it's like Nintendo WANTS the rest of our lives to die, just so that we can catch them all. If Nintendo was a pimp, I would be it's bitch purely because it would keep supplying me with Pokemon games. 8. Sonic Adventure 2 - Many people complain that since his jump into 3D, all his games have been terrible, but I actually thought the Adventure series were Sonic's best games. There was a camera issue maybe here and there, but I was never affected by anything that was annoying enough for me to stop enjoying the game in the least. I long for a game that lets you play as Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails in pure "Start here- finish here" gameplay. Screw it, give me SA3 7. TloZ: Oracle of Ages/Seasons - Best Zelda games ever made, and I say that seriously. I don't know what it is about them, but they're just excellent. They're extremely colourful, with beautiful landscapes, music, and a very good story. The puzzles were top notch, and when you finished one of them, you sent over your save game and went right through another whole quest! 6. Street Fighter IV - This is the first fighting game, well really the first competitive game, I've ever invested any time in becoming good at. The amount of effort it takes to actually be a good Street Fighter player is staggering, you're never allowed to rest. You need to be constantly reading your opponents movements, learning their patterns, thinking about what they could possibly do next, and then react accordingly. This is the only game where after a few rounds against a really good player, I'm Physically Tired!!!!! 5. Elder Scrolls IV - Oblivion - Huge. Absolutely huge is the best way to describe this game. When I first got my 360, this was the only game I had for...maybe....5 months? And to be honest, it was all I needed. I played this game every single day, and by the time I got my second 360 game, I had wracked up 170 hours worth of gameplay. Graphically, it made me almost crap myself. The feeling I got when I first stepped out of the sewers and into the realm of Cyrodiil was mind-boggling. There was no where I couldn't go, and the landscape was beyond gorgeous. The music is lovely, and I've actually got it on my iPod. In summation, Where are those 170 hours of my life, Oblivion? I don't want them back, I just want to know where you're keeping them. 4. Final Fantasy VIII - The second Final Fantasy game I ever played, and the latest entry in the main series that I enjoyed. And enjoy it I did. Granted, when I first played this game, the junction system eluded me, and many parts of it I just did not understand. Having come from the Materia system of FF7, the whole customizing section of 8 was a huge leap in a different direction. None the less, I still really loved this game. The characters, the music, the graphics (which were a vast improvement from 7) and just general fun factor. Playing this on my PSP has meant my free time has been kicked in the groin. 3. Super Mario World 2 - Yoshi's Island - See, there was this game right, it was pretty good, maybe you've heard of it, Super Mario World? Yeah, thought you might have. It was pretty awesome, and it's pretty well understood as the best SNES game. Who could argue with that? Well, see, here's the thing. Super Mario World got a sequel. Not a true sequel, granted it was a sequel in name only, but none the less, a second Super Mario World game was made. That game was called Yoshi's Island, and it was kinda, sorta, just a little, a million times better. Yoshi's island is by far my favourite platformer of all time. Baby Mario crying? That annoying you? then save his ass! The soundtrack to this game was so damn good, it really meshed well with the art style. Speaking of which, the art style was BRILLIANT!, it actually looked like someone had hand-drawn every single scene. Suffice it to say, I could go on for quite a while about why this game is awesome, but believe it or not, we have 2 more games to go!! 2. ....wait....why is there nothing here?? 1. Tie - Golden Sun & Golden Sun: The Lost Age/Final Fantasy VII That's why. Golden Sun. I honestly can't think of the words I need to describe why I love this game so much, and since this is a favourites list, I don't really have to. But just to put it into perspective, I was willing to give up a kidney for a 3rd Golden Sun game, and when Golden Sun DS was announced, I actually got a little sexually aroused. Yeah, that's right. As for Final Fantasy VII....well you all know the story there. (edited by Ex-SOLDIER on 04-06-10 01:46 AM) |
