This is slightly old news (as far as the Internet goes), as I'm sure some of you have probably heard about this already via Adventchildren_, AC.net, or elsewhere... but in case you haven't, it seems that K-pop singer Ivy has recreated the Tifa and Loz fight for a music video without Square Enix's permission.

Here's the YouTube video, for the record:

that is wrong. in no way should anything FFVII related be used in a pop video ever. they are like polar opposites. they go together like cocaine and waffles...

Lawl.

They actually did a pretty good job of turning it into (sortof) live action, judging from what I can see. I really couldn't care about it, but maybe that's because of my lacklustre opinion of AC these days.

There's a difference between an homage and a rip-off.

This is the latter.

I agree with Kasahara... This is a obvious rip. Even with an homage, it's professional curtosy to let the originator know about it...

Any plans from Square to sue?

Hah, IMO, they did an allright job, other than a crap attempt at Tifa's hair, a crap attempt at the Loz costume and hair, a crap attempt at materia (not to mention not showing the materia box), and the canon screwage.

I wouldn't call this a rip-off, a rip-off would be if they made a similar scene with different characters and such, wouldn't it? I would call this an attempt at a replication*, or maybe an attempt at a live-action.

Squeenix are money hungry like every other company, they'll most likely sue...but dude, they had Gackt help them market half of the friggin compilation, could there be a chance that they'll leave the situation alone and call it, uhh..what should I call this? unofficial late marketing?

*- Allways wanted to use "Replication" in a sentence.

Why is everybody so indignant about this? It gives credit to FF7 AC at the beginning of the video, which is all that really matters as far as I'm concerned. The concept of intellectual property is bullshit.

I agree. which is Tetsuya Nomura has effectively fucked Final Fantasy in the ass in the following ways:

1. Lance Bass as Sephiroth, Mandy Moore as Aeris, etc.
2. Shitty pop music in the compilation of FF7, with a surprising lack of music from the original game returning in decent form.
3. Pop music is part of the consumer/pop culture aesthetic, which is present in the endless cellphone adverts, Matrix-wannabe syndrome and hyper-metrosexual bullshit.
4. Gackt.
5. Making FF bedfellows with Disney.

From my point of view, this music video is far more respectful of AC than AC was of FF7. It is universally understood that even if a music video based on a movie is set in the film's enviornment and features its characters, it still does not exist within the same diegesis. Snoop Dogg might have rapped in Gotham City to promote the new Batman movie, but that doesn't make him a Batman character. AC and the compilation, on the other hand, are what those who adhere to the intentional fallacy call 'canon', meaning that it delibertately claims to wield authority over the original FF7 and thus imposes all its pop-culture bullshit on it.

Just saw that on kotaku. Never thought a something like that to happen. What stroke me more is that it was made for a korean music video and everybody knows that consoles are a niche market in Korea. Did things start to change there? Who knows maybe they did this because no one in Korea would jnow its a live action rip-off from FFVII : AC.
Anyway, they should have contacted SE first to ask for permission and SE, in my opinion, should sue them. Unless the Final Fantasy brand is not protected by korean patent law, then they are doomed (unless FF brand is protected by international patent laws of course).

I agree with you Lentils. I would have preferred Amano over Nomura, but I don t find Nomura bad actually. Something to cheer you up, in an interview Nomura stated that FFXIII will be the last FF game he designs as he wants to concentrate on KH only.

it looks extremely cheesy from my point of view.
It also looks strange because that guy looks nothing like Loz and that woman looks nothing like Tifa.

I take it you've never worked with intellectual property for a living? IP is how a large, large chunk of the world works. There's some things that are bad about it, like everything else, but that's the way it goes. Squeenix will probably take some sort of legal action (a lot of that, of course, depends on the intellectual property laws in South Korea), and I certainly don't blame them if they do.

I honestly don't believe Nomura can be held responsible for all of these things. To wit:

1. Lance Bass and Mandy Moore have worked extensively for Disney before KH. Their casting doubtless came down as a decision from Disney.
2. Nobuo Uematsu has been steadily leaving "classical" style music behind for years in favor of a more rock-based approach. Evidence: The Black Mages, the Blue Dragon OST.
3. The Matrix and Matrix-style effects have very, very strong origins in anime-- and CG anime artists (not just for AC, but several other films as well) have in turn been influenced by The Matrix. What goes around comes around. As for the cellphone ads, in Japan, Final Fantasy characters have shilled for Coca-Cola (FF9, which Nomura didn't work on) and McDonalds (Chocobo series... again, no Nomura) in the past. The DoCoMo cellphone product placement is unfortunate, but it was inevitable. Gonna skip the hyper-metrosexual bullshit bit, as I kind of like that about FF these days (if you want a more masculine Square Enix series, there's always Front Mission ;)).
4. Gonna skip this one, as I don't know the details ;)
5. Nomura is supposedly a HUGE Disney fan, so I'm not going to argue this point ;) I might also point out that Disney is popular in Japan in a way that eclipses the Western world; check out all the high-end Disney toys that come out of the place as an example.

Over? Wait a minute... if this was any other part of the Compilation, I could see that. But Advent Children? It's a tacked-on addition-- a sequel-- to the original FF7, not a replacement. Nothing I've seen in AC "wields authority" over anything in FF7.

Oh, and mtZ:

That's a really good question, actually. My guess is that FF7 was released on PC over there, just like it was in the States, Europe, etc.

The real question for me is: why? As far as I can tell that video has absolutely nothing to do with Advent Children, Square Enix, or, well, anything. How random.

It does make me think that a live action Advent Children coulda looked nifty. These folks in particular did a nice job on the set, but I could live with different actors and maybe a tone-down on the cheesiness.

FFVII for pc might have been released in South Korea, but did it have any impact? I never read somewhere how good the pc released FFs did fare in Korea, but generally its number of sales are worldwide much lower than its console counterparts. Apart from Starcraft and various MMOs, I really don t know what Koreans play. An expert in this field would sure enlighten us.
Irrelevant to the thread: I really preferred Uematsu s classic and techno music over his current rock music (see FFIV, FFVI and FFVII, FFVIII). I did like the music from the Black Mages, but the originals are superior. Also the piano collections are tremendous and FFX s music was based on piano and I liked too.

I very highly doubt FFVII had as much of an impact as any Blizzard game, but manga and anime are fairly popular in Korea, so that's probably where a lot of their JRPG fanbase comes from.

(Totally random bit of trivia: It seems FFVII was released for PC even in Japan o_O)

As for Nobuo... I've come to believe FFVIII is the pinnacle of his work with the Final Fantasy series; though the OSTs for FFIX and FFX (the latter of which he didn't completely compose) did have their moments, I'm not surprised to see him moving on to something different (albeit with varying degrees of success). Time will tell how long Nobuo will be rockin' :)

Thinking of it, cultural japanese products were banned from South Korea, meaning that never any japanese product was ever officially released in South Korea, so under normal circumstances noone could have the slighest idea of FF. How could they even have a JRPG fanbase when none of these games were ever released there? There could have been a niche fanbase, but I wonder, did they import the games, was that even authorised by their government?
I suppose it happened somehow like that: Someone from the team saw AC and really liked the battles, then he proposed his superiors to make the video-clip a live-action of the scene, everybody liked the idea and approved it.

I agree with you Reeve, FFVIII was the peak of Uematsu s music. Libera Fatali, eyes on me, but my favorite is Man with the Machine Gun (Laguna s battle theme), that s why I like Laguna so much.

A somewhat belated update on the music video situation: looks like Squeenix is suing the company that made the video for copyright infringement, defamation of character, and/or plagarism. (source 1 | source 2)

I love how it isnt even subtle infringement, they just ripped off the whole damn thing:LOL:

But seriously, kinda surprising how they thought they wouldn't get caught, still, i must say they did an alright job of putting it into live action, but my main question is...

"You ripped off everything else, so where the hell was Loz's Dual Hound?"
